Acts 2 tells us about the unrepeatable work of Christ on that Pentecost, an inseparable work from His death and resurrection.  If you are perplexed about what it means, you are not the first to have that question.  And we get the answer from Peter quoting Joel 2.  In the background of Joel 2 is Numbers 11.  So we went back to Numbers to see that the people briefly prophesied to show that they had received the Spirit.  What is normative for us, since this is an unrepeatable event, is not the beginning of Acts 2 but the end.  That is, the new disciples did not speak in tongues but instead devoted themselves to the apostle’s teaching and fellowship, the breaking of bread and the prayers.  These are signs today that one has the Spirit and is filled with the Spirit.
