We are picking back up the story of David when King Saul had told Saul’s son Jonathan to kill David. The Scriptures remind us that Jonathan, Saul’s son, found much joy in David. So Jonathan told David, “My father Saul seeks to kill you, so be on your guard in the morning and stay in a secret place and hide yourself and I will go out and stand next to my father in the field where you are hidden and speak to my father about you. And if I learn anything I will let you know.”

And Jonathan spoke well of David to his father the king and said to him, “Don’t sin against your servant David, because he hasn’t sinned against you and because the things he has done have been good for you for he took his life in his hand and struck down Goliath the Philistine giant and the Lord worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw this and rejoiced! Why then sin against innocent blood by killing David without a good reason?” And Saul followed this advice, swearing by the name of the Lord, “David shall not be put to death.” So Jonathan called David and told him all these things and Jonathan brought David to Saul and David was with Saul just as David had been before.

And there was war again. And again David went out and fought with the Philistines and hit them with a major defeat so that they fled from him. Then an evil spirit from the Lord came upon Saul as Saul sat in his house with his spear in his hand. And David played his little harp as he often did because it helped to soothe Saul, especially when an evil spirit came upon Saul. But again Saul with this evil spirit upon him took the spear in his hand and threw it thinking to pin David to the wall with the spear.

Did Saul finally pin David to the wall this third time now that Saul has tried? Find out next time – in two weeks.
