So we left off with King Saul going to the bathroom in a cave where David and his men were hiding and the men suggested that this was the time to strike Saul.

Now David got up from where he was sitting deep in the cave and snuck up to King Saul and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. But this troubled David greatly because David, himself anointed to be the next king, had done this to the current King anointed by God. Therefore he convinced his men not to attack Saul and Saul got up and left the cave and went on his way.

Afterward, David came out of hiding in the cave and called to Saul, he said, “My lord the king!” And David bowed to the king and said, “Why do you believe the people who are telling you that I want to hurt you? Today I could have killed you, some even told me to do it, but I spared your life. I said, I’m not going to kill my lord because He is anointed of God. Look here at the corner of your robe that is in my hand. I cut it off, showing that I could have killed you but did not so that you would know that I’m not out to kill you. I’m not sinning against you, though you are trying to hunt me down to take my life. May God judge between us and may He avenge me but I will not take it into my own hands.” When David was done speaking, Saul said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And King Saul wept and said, “You are more righteous than I, for you repaid me good whereas I repaid you evil. May God reward you with good for what you did to me today. I know that you will certainly be the king of Israel. Therefore, promise me that you will not kill my children and their children.” So David promised. Then Saul went home and David and his men went up to the stronghold.

Now the prophet Samuel died and all Israel assembled and mourned his loss and they buried him in his house at Ramah.

Heavenly Father, may we always wait on you and let you judge, we thank you that you judge us not on our own righteousness but according to what Christ has done for us on the cross. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
