James 5:7-20 (also read Matthew 5:11-12 and 33-37) shows us that the one with true faith, like Elijah and Job, patiently prays. We have to define patiently not from our own experience but from the examples of the prophets (including Elijah) and Job. Job is not someone that we would consider patient, but he is someone with the kind of patience James is calling for — someone who longingly waits on God and cries out to God for vindication. It is an active kind of patience — a patience that prepares the fields and prays fervently for showers of blessing. The one with genuine faith displays this kind of patience. Taking oaths to make our promises sound believable and grumbling about others are from unbelief.
