1 Cor 10:1-13 shows us how Paul could only partially identify with Jewish people regarding the sacraments. Their fathers are our fathers. And these fathers experienced types of our sacraments (baptism and the Lord’s Supper). But we cannot join in with the way some of our fathers responded to these types — some as idolaters, some with sexual immorality, some putting Christ to the test, and some with grumbling. We cannot join them in this evil behavior. We all struggle with the temptation to do these things — they are common temptations and we can share our struggles with others but we cannot join in these things in order to identify with them. So we can join a Jewish culture (as well as the culture of those with a Christian heritage) in order to save some, but we cannot join in to these responses to the great acts of salvation in Exodus.
