Psalm 98 opens the same way Psalm 96 and Psalm 149.  “Sing to the Lord a new song” also is found in Psalm 33 and Isaiah 42:10.  The idea of a new song is expressed also in Psalm 40:3 and 144:9.  And the praise of the Lord crescendos as the Book of Psalms moves from beginning to end.  It is not really a surprise that a “hymnal” would call for singing a new song and for the praise of the Lord to spread as a crescendo throughout the earth to the ends of the earth.  Why do we sing?  For the Lord has done marvelous things!  Especially the accomplishment of salvation by Jesus.  How do we sing?  Striving for excellence and not chaos in our music.  Making a joyful noise actually means to make a musical shout (if the instrument is the human voice) or a musical blast of a trumpet or horn.  What should we sing?  A new song.
