Isaiah 3:9-4:1 pictures the coming exile of Jerusalem and Judah. The leaders in Jerusalem are like a bunch of babies and sissies. The towns of Judah are like women with wandering eyes looking for the hot guys and doing everything they can to draw attention to themselves including wearing jewelry. And those who did evil (these leaders and towns) will have evil done to them. The men they have attracted will come and strip them naked. The leaders who had lined their own pockets with the spoil of the poor will have the spoils carried off by another. The details of the text apply to us in a different way as we live at a different time in the history of salvation as well as a different culture. These New Testament principles apply to us: Particularly for women — “let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit” (cf. 1 Peter 3:3-4). And particularly for men — real men trust in Jesus and lead their families to follow Him instead of acting like a bunch of babies or sissies.
