Isaiah 9:1-7 shows us a vision of the Christ living in Galilee of the Gentiles, a vision of the nation multiplying because it is now including the Gentiles, a vision of a great victory breaking the rod of Satan, a vision of the end of war and tells us that this is all possible because God gave us His Son. What a wonderful gift!
This message is evangelistic in thrust and emphasizes God’s grace in Christ and His Lordship. And so it unpacks the four titles (each with two parts) making up the one name “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” All four titles highlight that the Christ is King. He is a king who needs to call on no wise men for counsel. He is the Strong Man — the Champion King who leads His people into battle and fights on their behalf and even in their place. He is like a father to the people of the kingdom of God — providing for their welfare. He is prince — a more political title in that the emphasis is on administrating the kingdom. He rules over a kingdom that is everlasting and that provides shalom. And He is a wonder, He is even God. And so if His light has shown in your heart you can try to hide the light under a bushel but the zeal of the Holy-Warrior God will prevail.
