Isaiah 10:5-34 ends with the same kind of feel as The Lord of the Rings. It is an epic battle and seige. But the downfall of such armies is arrogance and self-confidence. The king of Assyria thought that he was doing these things of his own strength and wisdom but in fact he was a tool of God Almighty. And so eventually his turn would come for punishment. The nation of Judah is described by God as a godless nation. They were not the good guys — God weighs the heart. Just because the king of Assyria was doing God’s bidding, even though unawares, did not make him the good guy. God weighs the heart and his heart was arrogant and proud. God’s intentions in all these things were pure and honorable and good, but the same cannot be said for the heart of Assyria. Likewise with the cross, God’s intentions were good but those who killed Jesus did so out of the evil in their hearts. We like to weigh things that are tangible — measure in numbers, outward appearance, wealth, size and strength, etc. But God weighs the heart. He has weighed the heart of Jesus and raised Him from the dead. May our goal be wholehearted and pure devotion in the little moments and the epic battles of this life to Him.
