Q&A 40/41 Of the Moral Law

God never designed the Law to be the Way of Man’s Justification since the Fall, Gal 3:21-22 Is the Law then against the Promises of God?  God forbid! for if there had been a Law given which could have given Life, verily Righteousness should have been by the Law; but the Scripture hath concluded all under Sin, that the Promise by Faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.  But it was promulgated to convince Men of Sin, Rom 7:7 What shall we say then?  Is the Law Sin?  God forbid! Nay, I had not known Sin, but by the Law; for I had not known Lust, except the Law had said, Thou shalt not covet.  And bring them to Christ, Gal 3:24 Wherefore the Law was our Schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by Faith.

Q&A 42 Of Love to God and Men

There is nothing too dear for a Christian in this World, but he must give it up by self-denial, when it comes in Competition with his supreme Love to God, Luke 14:26 If any Man come to me, and hate not his Father, and Mother, Wife, and Children, and Brehren, and Sisters, yea, and his own Life also, he cannot be my Disciple, i.e. love them less than me.
