Isaiah 32 prompts me to ask, “Are you happy with your spiritual growth?” I’m not. The Heidelberg Catechism asks, “But can those who are converted to God keep these commandments (the ten commandments) perfectly?” and answers “No, for even the holiest of them make only a small beginning in obedience in this life…” (114). I am not one of the holiest of them, I feel like I have not even made a small beginning in obedience in this life. And I will never be satisfied with my righteousness. But Isaiah tells us about the giving of the King and the giving of the Spirit. I cannot be satisfied with my own righteousness but I can rest in His righteousness. I can seek forgiveness of my sins and righteousness in Christ and pray for the grace of the Spirit. I can practice godliness and speak truth concerning the Lord, and satisfy the craving of those who are hungry because Jesus is Lord and He has poured out the Spirit from on high upon us. We are not meant to be self-satisfied in our spiritual life, we should never feel like we have arrived, we should not think we can just coast through the rest of our lives, but we can be content with the righteousness and justice of our Savior.
