Isaiah 28 is a difficult passage to understand because of the distance we have from it politically and religiously. But the people of Israel and Judah did not understand it in a different way — they did not understand it with their hearts, they did not believe it. The prophets (seers) could not see straight, let alone walk in a straight line and the priests stumbled about like drunk men in their giving judgment and in teaching God’s word. When Isaiah spoke, all they could hear was poetic gibberish “sav lasav sav lasav kav lakav kav lakav ze’er sham ze’er sham.” And so God’s judgment was that they would hear speaking in tongues and not understand His word to them. But believe this — believe the word of God — that the one mockingly crowned with a crown of thorns has become a crown of glory (5-6) and the stone that was rejected has become the cornerstone (16). Do you understand the word of God?
