Mark 14:53-72 is a study in contrasts. Jesus is in the fiery furnace facing a religious trial for blasphemy. Peter is warming himself by the fire being accused of associating with Jesus and blasphemes Jesus. Jesus is being tried by the high priest; Peter by one of the servant girls of the high priest. Peter was under very little pressure, like most of us in the American context. But that pressure is real and we all face the same kinds of temptations. Is the pressure making you uncomfortable yet? Are you feeling the heat yet? We have a tendency to fold even when we are only warming ourselves by the fire at a safe distance. Following Jesus means having to stand up to peer pressure and confessing Him. What will you do?
