So David took out a stone and slung it and struck Goliath the giant and killed him. David wasn’t carrying a sword in his hand so he ran and stood over the giant and took the giant’s sword and drew it out of its sheath and cut off his head with it and when the Philistines realized that their champion was dead they fled and the army of Israel went on the attack and chased them over a great distance. Eventually the army of Israel came back from chasing the Philistines and plundered their camp.
When Saul saw David go out against the giant, he said to the commander of the army, “Who’s son is this youth?” And the commander didn’t know. So the king said to inquire into it. And as soon as David came back with the head of the giant in his hand the commander took him before Saul and asked him whose son he was. David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem.” Saul then resolved that David wasn’t going to go back to his father’s house like he had been doing. Saul made David like one of his sons.
As soon as David had finished talking to Saul, the soul of Saul’s son Jonathan was knit to the soul of David and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. They were fast friends, closer than brothers. David and Jonathan would be best friends forever. So Jonathan made a pact with David and Jonathan took off his robe and his armor and sword and bow and belt and gave it to David. And David went out and fought for Saul wherever Saul sent him and was successful everywhere he went and Saul put David over the elite unit they called the men of war and the people of Israel were glad to see it.
Then when they were coming home as David had struck down the giant and been fighting successfully wherever Saul sent him, the women came out of the cities of Israel singing and dancing and playing their tambourines and other instruments to meet King Saul and the women sang, “Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” Next Sunday we will see what Saul thought of that but Saul’s son Jonathan would always be loyal to David for they were fast friends forever.
