1 Corinthians 9:1-18 shows us that Paul is no volunteer — he has been drafted by God — and so like any good soldier he should be paid. But Paul went above and beyond the call of duty by choosing voluntarily to go without it. This was a countercultural move, but he had a really good reason for doing this thing that would have been seen as an insult otherwise — he does not want to put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ. First you must be convinced that he had this right in order to see that he has given it up, but when you see it then you can follow his example and give up your right to do something like drinking alcohol if it will cause a weak brother or sister, for example someone who is a new Christian and recently has been saved from some idolatry like slavery to alcohol, to fall back into that idolatry.
