Isaiah 36:1-37:7 continues the argument about trusting in the nations or trusting in the living God. The question, “In whom do you now trust?” is one that Isaiah could ask as well as the Assyrian army field commander. Both criticize Judah for trusting in Egypt. The army field commander, however, does not understand the religion of Israel and thinks that Hezekiah has angered the God of Israel because he took down the high places. These things remind us that we need to watch for ways that people can look at us and see us trusting God with our lips but not our actions but that the world will not always be right in their critique because they do not understand our faith. The army field commander also reminds us that people will not only come at us with logical critiques of our faith and our practice but that they will use emotional appeals. Thus the commander is not concerned that saying the LORD sent him but that the LORD cannot stop him sounds inconsistent. He is trying to make the people afraid. Thus we too need to remember that not only our logical but also our emotional answer to the question is important. May you trust in Jesus with your whole heart.
