So a couple weeks ago we saw King Saul on his way to see the prophet Samuel at the head of a group of prophets prophesying with many of Saul’s spies having joined in with them prophesying. And even before Saul arrived to that place the Spirit of God rushed upon him and when he came before Samuel he too stripped off his clothes and prophesied all that day and all that night and people again began to whisper, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

So while Saul was prophesying like crazy, David fled that place and came before Saul’s son Jonathan asking him, ‘What have I done wrong to your father that he seeks to kill me?’ Jonathan said that Saul would not hide something like that from him. So they devised a test to see. David would not show up to eat at the king’s table but instead hide in the field until the third day. If he is missed, Jonathan was to say that David went to the yearly sacrifice in Bethlehem. If this makes Saul angry then Jonathan would know it was because Saul wanted to harm David. And they made a plan so that Jonathan could relay the message to David about whether Saul was in a murderous rampage or if all was well. Jonathan would shoot some arrows and send a boy to go find them and if he says to the boy that the arrows are on this side of you then you can come safely but if he said to the boy that the arrows are beyond you then you need to flee. Saul didn’t say anything the first day, but the second day he asked why David had not been to the meal for two days. So Jonathan told his father about the sacrifice in Bethlehem.

Did Saul get very angry because he still wanted to kill David and did Jonathan tell his friend David the truth about Saul’s intentions? We’ll have to wait and see.
