We left off wondering if Saul’s spies were able to seize David when they saw a group of prophets prophesying and Samuel standing there as their head. As soon as the spies saw the prophet Samuel leading this group of prophets prophesying they knew they were in the right place to find David. But instead of being able to seize David the Spirit of God came upon Saul’s spies and they joined in the prophesying.

News of this got back to Saul so he sent a second group of spies and the same thing happened to them – instead of arresting David and hauling him back to Saul they joined in the prophesying. Again a third time Saul sent messengers or spies and they also prophesied. So instead of sending someone else again, the fourth time Saul went himself. He went to Ramah, where David and Samuel had been earlier, and came to a great well in Secu and asked around where he might find Samuel and David. And one person told him that they were living in Naioth in Ramah. This wasn’t far away and Saul went straightaway to that place and when he arrived he would see Samuel was standing at the head of the group of prophets who were prophesying.

Now King Saul has prophesied before. When the prophet Samuel anointed Saul to be the king of Israel one of the signs he told him to encourage Saul that it was God who had anointed him to be king was that he would meet a group of prophets coming down from a high place with harp, tambourine, flute and a little harp and they would be prophesying and then the Spirit of the Lord would rush upon Saul and he would be turned into another man. That sign came to pass that very day for when Saul came to Gibeah a group of prophets met him and the Spirit of God rushed upon him and he prophesied among them and the people began to wonder, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” But we know that the Spirit of God has now left Saul and Saul has been tormented from time to time by an evil spirit from God. And so here we are – three times Saul sent spies and those spies prophesied instead of seizing David and now Saul himself has come and soon he will see Samuel at the head of a group of prophets.

Does Saul prophesy again or is he now able to seize David? Will people wonder again, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” Or is the fourth time the charm?  Find out next time.
