1 Cor 4:17-6:8 is a very appropriate text for Worldwide Communion Sunday. The tradition that Paul teaches us in 1 Cor 11 is just as clear and well known as the tradition of the church with regard to men and women in the family. And they are interrelated as the text shows us that one particular problem with men and women in the family had led to problems for men and women in the church — this problem had put up a roadblock for eating together at the Lord’s Table in sincerity and in truth. Paul answers some of the most common objections that people then and now have regarding these kinds of issues and shows a different way forward than that the Jewish or Roman worlds would have suggested.
