Daniel 5 is the reason for our idiomatic expression “the writing is on the wall” or “the hand is writing on the wall” meaning that disaster is imminent. Belshazaar may not have been the blood descendant of King Nebuchadnezzar but he did imitate his father and even exaggerate his father’s sins. And God did not give him time to repent, but that very night he saw the hand writing on the wall he died. For us the hand is writing on the wall as we see wars and rumors of war, earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, persecution, false prophets, and the like. Are we ready for Jesus to come?
