Isaiah 38 includes a poem by King Hezekiah after he was told that he would die from his illness but then he prayed and God gave him another 15 years. If you could read this book without having heard the good news about the coming of Jesus Christ and you see the vision that Isaiah is describing the last two chapters might have you thinking that Hezekiah was the coming king. However, this one shatters that illusion. Hezekiah is going to die (even though given 15 more years to live) and his death would not be beneficial to God or to God’s people. But while Hezekiah is not the promised Messiah, he does point to that Messiah — Jesus. And Jesus wants us to hear that warning as well. We need to hear God saying, “Set your house in order, for you shall die.” We need to know that our days are numbered. If we are going to be ready when death comes to us, then we must know Jesus. If we are going to set our houses in order then we must be pointing all those under our roof to the one who saves. You have been given more time this moment so that you might place your trust in Jesus and point others to Him. You have been spared from death so that you might glorify God and enjoy Him.
