John 20:1-10 tells us that the tomb was almost empty, which we will discover is even more exciting than saying that the tomb was “empty.” Yet the passage ends a bit disappointing — telling us that John and Peter did not yet understand the Scripture that Jesus must rise from the dead and then that they went back to their homes. Where we are leaving off the story reflects the fact that it will take us a few Sundays to explore the resurrection in John’s Gospel and that it took a little while for the disciples. Nevertheless, what Peter and John saw on the floor of that tomb is highly significant indeed. Just don’t believe everything you read online about it.
