This is already the third episode in a row where the people of Israel were grumbling about being thirsty or hungry. That there are two very similar stories about being thirsty so close together shows that Israel’s lack of trust in God is absurd. Worse, they charge again that Moses has only brought them out into the wilderness to kill them. Yet God did not respond to their rebellious ways with punishment even this third time. Instead, He took this opportunity to teach Israel how they could never be thirsty again. Now you will discover that ancient Israel is not so unlike you today, but thanks be to God you need never be thirsty again either. So we turn to the story of Israel as they approach ever closer to Mount Sinai.
