Luke 1:57-66 tells us about the birth and circumcision/naming of John the Baptist. The people say in response to this course of events: “What then will this child be?” We often wonder the same thing about our children, but Zechariah knew from what the angel told him. Probably the longest days of silence for Zechariah were the seven before John’s circumcision and naming. But when he was able to speak, Zechariah let out the words of blessing to God — knowing that John would prepare the way for Jesus. We sing each year, “What child is this?” about Jesus. It is how we answer this question that makes all the difference. And leads us to the next questions, “What will you become?” and “What then will your children be?”
